After weeks of eclipses, endings, revelations, uncertainty and change, the Virgo New Moon arrives on September 10th at 18 degrees at 8:25pm PST, inviting us down back to Earth.

Everything may not have necessarily settled, and we may not understand what the eclipses yet revealed to us, but the transformation we have gone through has to start to find its way into the ordinary moments of our lives. Into the way we wake up in the morning, the food we eat, the boundaries we hold, the work we give our energy to, and the rituals we return to. This is the magic of Virgo. And after an eclipse portal that has asked us to surrender so much of what we thought we knew, this New Moon is asking a simple question: What have you learned, and how will you live it?

Virgo New Moon After the Eclipse Portal

A New Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon meet at the same degree of the zodiac, beginning a new lunar cycle. Energetically, New Moons represent the dark, fertile space before something takes form. We can't yet see the Moon illuminated in the night sky, just as we often can't fully see where the intentions we plant under a New Moon will eventually lead us.

This New Moon feels particularly significant because it is the first New Moon since the Leo Solar Eclipse on August 12... the lunation that opened our most recent eclipse portal.

The weeks between eclipses can feel strange; time bends, things accelerate, other things disappear, relationships shift, old identities loosen & information arrives before we're ready to understand what it means. Eclipses rarely ask permission before rearranging the furniture.

But Virgo does something different... it walks into the room afterward, opens the windows, looks around and asks: What belongs here now?

Not everything revealed during eclipse season requires immediate action. Some things need time to settle into the body before the mind can make meaning from them. But integration eventually asks something of us... if you discovered that something isn't working, what changes? If you realized you've outgrown something, what are you making room for? If you've been shown where you're exhausted, disconnected, overextended, controlling, avoiding or abandoning yourself, what small choice could begin to create another way? Transformation doesn't only happen in dramatic moments... it can also look like what you choose to do tomorrow morning.

Virgo and the Search for Wholeness

Virgo is a sign often reduced to routines, organization, health, productivity and perfectionism, but beneath all of those expressions lives an archetype of wholeness - of optimization. Its symbol, the Maiden, originally speaks not simply to virginity in the modern sexual sense, but to someone who belongs to themselves; 'whole unto themselves.'

Virgo rules the harvest... she observes, sorts, separates and discerns. This is useful, this isn't. This nourishes me, this depletes me. This belongs to me, this doesn't. This is mine to tend, this is mine to release. Virgo teaches us that discernment is an act of devotion, but like every archetype, Virgo has a shadow. Discernment can become judgment, optimization can become perfectionism, devotion can become obsession, care for the body can become fear of the body, practice can become rigidity, and the desire to become whole can turn into the belief that we must somehow become pure. Pure enough, healthy enough, healed enough, conscious enough, productive enough or spiritual enough. As though there is some perfected version of ourselves waiting at the end of enough self-improvement. There isn't; there is only this deeply imperfect, contradictory, changing experience of being human. I think Virgo's deepest medicine isn't teaching us how to eliminate those contradictions, but how to tend to them.

What Did the Virgo South Node Teach Us?

Although the South Node has now moved into Leo, it traveled through Virgo from January 2025 until July 2026. For approximately eighteen months, the collective South Node moved through an archetype associated with analysis, improvement, work, health, discernment and the desire to make things better. The South Node often reveals patterns that have become overdeveloped; strategies we know intimately, but can no longer rely upon in the same way. And Virgo has many strategies for dealing with uncertainty... analyze, organize, fix, research, make another list, find the pattern, perfect the practice. Improve yourself enough that perhaps uncertainty will finally stop being uncertain.

Across the zodiac, the North Node was moving through Pisces, reminding us that there are places the analytical mind simply cannot take us. There are questions without immediate answers, endings we cannot predict, relationships we can't control, futures we can't predict. There are moments when another journal entry, tarot reading, spreadsheet, wellness protocol or perfectly executed morning routine isn't going to give us what we're actually searching for.

Pisces teaches surrender, imagination, mystery, intuition, interconnectedness and trust in something larger than the individual mind. But Pisces has shadows too; surrender can become avoidance, flow a lack of boundaries, trust can become denial and mysticism can become escapism. So the lesson was integration of these two polarities - and that is what is completing and beginning anew now. The river (Pisces) needs its banks (Virgo)... Without the riverbanks, water floods everything around it. Without the water, the riverbanks surround nothing at all. Virgo gives shape to Pisces' magic. Pisces reminds Virgo why the shape exists in the first place.

Purity Is Not the Same Thing as Wholeness

When I think of Virgo, I think of health, wellness and recognizing the holy in the embodied. In spiritual and wellness spaces, there can be a tendency to conflate consciousness with purity. To imagine that becoming more spiritual means becoming less messy, less sensual, wild, contradictory or human. There is always another thing we could remove... a food, substance, habit, desire, a supposedly "low vibration" experience, or a rule that might finally prove we are doing life correctly.

Discernment matters here - and it's so subjective. There are things that nourish us and things that harm, choices that bring us closer to ourselves and those that take us away. Our bodies communicate with us constantly, and Virgo asks us to listen. But discernment asks: Does this serve me? Purity asks: Does choosing this make me 'good'? Those are very different questions.

The highest expression of Virgo isn't about creating a perfectly clean life. It's about developing such an intimate relationship with yourself that you can move through the messiness of being alive without abandoning yourself inside of it. You can dance until sunrise and know when your body needs sleep, you can experience pleasure without needing to turn pleasure into escape, you can be disciplined without becoming rigid. And particularly - you can be deeply spiritual and deeply human.

This is where Virgo and Pisces meet - not order or chaos, but the ongoing practice of learning when to hold the riverbanks and when to let the river carry you.

A New Beginning at the Threshold

During this new moon, there are several planets are sitting at 0° of new signs; the very beginning of an archetypal landscape... Mercury has just entered Libra, Venus has just entered Scorpio, and Chiron has recently entered Taurus. Zero degrees carries the feeling of crossing into new territory... we have left one room, but we haven't yet learned the architecture of the next one.

Virgo might desperately want instructions here, but the sky isn't necessarily giving us a completed map yet. Instead, Mercury - ruler of this Virgo New Moon - has just entered Libra and forms a kite configuration involving Uranus in Gemini, Pluto in Aquarius and Neptune in Aries. There is a huge amount of Air moving through this configuration: ideas, conversations, perspectives and possibilities that may not have been available to us before. Mercury's relationship with Uranus can disrupt habitual thinking and introduce unexpected perspectives. Pluto invites us beneath the surface of our own narratives, while Neptune opens the rational mind toward imagination, intuition and realities we can't necessarily explain through logic alone.

The ruler of an Earth-sign New Moon - a lunation concerned with the tangible reality of our lives - is caught in conversation with planets that stretch our perception far beyond the tangible. We need both because insight without embodiment can remain an idea forever,

but embodiment without imagination simply repeats what already exists. Perhaps something genuinely new becomes possible when we allow ourselves to imagine beyond our existing reality and then begin making small choices that give that reality somewhere to land.

The Small Things Are the Spell

Virgo reminds us that our lives are shaped through repetition... through what we practice, feed, return to, where our attention goes, how we speak to ourselves, care for the spaces we inhabit, respond when our nervous system becomes activated, and how often we say yes when we mean no, or vice versa. These seemingly insignificant choices become the architecture of a life. This is why Virgo's relationship to ritual is so powerful... a ritual isn't powerful because you performed it perfectly. It's powerful because you brought presence to something ordinary. You made tea and actually tasted it, stepped outside and felt the ground beneath your feet, stretched your body and listened instead of forcing. You closed your laptop, went for a walk, drank water, danced, rested... Because the sacred doesn't only exist in extraordinary experiences.

The Practice Continues

This New Moon doesn't arrive with all the answers... in many ways, the astrology suggests the opposite. A feeling of standing at the beginning of something. Several planets have crossed into new signs, eclipse season has rearranged pieces of our lives, the future is whispering to us before we have language for what it is saying.

Virgo reminds us that we don't need to understand the entire journey in order to tend to the piece of life directly in front of us, and Pisces reminds us that we don't need to control the entire journey in order to trust ourselves inside of it.

That's the integration... to create structure without trying to control the mystery, practice discernment without closing ourselves to experience, to care for our bodies without making them projects, to be devoted without demanding perfection, and to build riverbanks strong enough that we can actually surrender to the river. Wholeness isn't the absence of mess, but learning how to remain in relationship with ourselves through all of it.

Embodiment Practice | Tending the Inner Landscape

For this New Moon, rather than creating an enormous list of habits to fix or goals to accomplish, choose one small area of your life to tend.

Begin by finding somewhere comfortable to sit or lie down. Place one hand somewhere that feels grounding; your belly, your heart, your thighs, or directly on the Earth beneath you.

Take several slow breaths and notice the edges of your physical body, your skin, the surface supporting you, the places where you end and the world around you begins. These are your riverbanks.

Then begin to notice what is moving inside them; emotion, sensation, restlessness, fatigue, desire, grief, excitement, perhaps nothing at all. For a few minutes, practice simply allowing the river to move inside the container of your body.

Then ask: What would help me feel more supported in my actual life right now?

Notice what arrives before your mind begins creating an entire self-improvement plan. Choose one small practice that feels like an act of devotion rather than correction.

Follow with the journal prompts below.
