Aries New Moon: When Fire Leads

The Aries New Moon brings a fire that rises through instinct, through the adrenals, through the very place where life insists on itself.

At 4:52am PST on April 17th, the Sun and Moon meet in Aries, but they are not the only ones. The sky is saturated with Aries energy in a way we have not seen since 1821, a time marked by collective, independence movements, and the raw human need to break free. Your body likely recognizes this feeling now... the tension, the urgency, the sense that something within you and our collective experience cannot remain where it has been.

The Archetype of Aries; Instinct, Survival & the Fountain of Life

Aries is the first breath. The moment life enters the body and the nervous system floods awake. It rules the head and the adrenals; the places where instinct overrides logic, where the body prepares to act before we understand why. Aries is survival and the sacred impulse that says move, go, be.

And yet, its symbol, the ram’s horns, curves like a spiral... like a current rising upward. Ancient traditions have linked this shape to the fountain of life, the force that pours from source into form. Aries is not just the beginning… it is the energy that makes beginnings possible.

In Greek mythology, the golden ram is sent at the final moment to rescue two children, Phrixus and Helle from sacrifice; a divine, instinctual force that acts without hesitation, carrying them across a threshold between life and death. It does not question, but simply moves, and in doing so, it saves. But the story doesn't end there. Once they reach safety, the ram itself is sacrificed, and from it remains the Golden Fleece - something that becomes part of a much larger journey. It teaches us that instinct may initiate the journey, pulling us out of danger, pushing us to act, helping us survive... but it is not meant be purely driven by urgency. It is meant to be refined as something we can direct. To evolve from raw survival into conscious courage; the kind of fire that doesn’t just react, but chooses what is truly worth moving toward.

The First Decan: Mars Ruled Fire & the Collective Tension

Each zodiac sign spans 30 degrees, and those 30 degrees are divided into three sections of 10 degrees each, known as decans. While all three belong to the same sign, each decan carries a slightly different flavour, influenced by an additional planetary ruler. In Aries, the first decan is ruled by Mars, the second by the Sun, and the third by Jupiter. You can think of this as a progression through the sign... from raw instinct, to embodied identity, to expanded meaning. This lunation is distinctly working with two expression of Aries at once - the beginning and the end.

The early degrees of Aries - where Mars, Mercury, Saturn, and Neptune are gathered - are ruled by Mars. This is Aries in its most raw, unfiltered form. It is the fire of survival... and potentially of division... of “me versus you.” It is the instinct to defend, to push and to act without hesitation.

With Saturn and Neptune here, two social and collective planets, this energy is not just personal. We are seeing it play out in the collective: tension, polarization, confusion, and a deep questioning of what is real and what is worth fighting for. Neptune dissolves clarity. Saturn demands structure. Mars wants to act. So there can be a feeling of friction; of wanting to move forward, but not fully knowing how... of reacting from instinct, while simultaneously being asked to take responsibility for that reaction.

This is the part of Aries that can be destructive when unconscious. The part that burns before it understands. But it is also the part that reveals truth... quickly, viscerally, without filters. And the question becomes: what are you actually fighting for?

The Third Decan: Jupiter Ruled Fire, Faith & the Possibility

At the same time, the Sun and Moon meet in the later degrees of Aries, alongside Chiron and Eris... activating the third decan, ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter expands, bringing meaning, perspective, and the possibility of growth beyond what we can currently see. Even within difficulty, it carries a thread of faith.

Chiron illuminates the wound... the places where we have felt unsafe to exist fully as we are. Eris brings disruption... the parts of us that have been cast out, the chaos that forces truth to the surface. Together, this is not an easy energy, because the Sun and Moon shine a light on both of these archetypes. But it is not without hope... because Jupiter’s influence here reminds us that there is purpose within the chaos. What is being stirred is not random... it is revealing something that is ready to be healed, reclaimed and integrated.

This is Aries as a willingness to stand for something larger than ego. The courage to move toward truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. The faith that something new can emerge from what is breaking down.

Aries New Moon: From War to Wisdom

What makes this New Moon so potent is that it holds both of these expressions at once.

The first decan; Mars ruled, reactive, instinctive. The third decan; Jupiter ruled, expansive, meaning-making.

The beginning and the end of Aries. The fire that divides and the fire that unites. The impulse to fight and the wisdom to know why. This is a moment where something is being asked to evolve. Where the way you have used your fire in the past may no longer be enough for where you are going.

When I pulled a card for this lunation, it was the Death card... symbolized by Angel’s Trumpet. A plant that exists between worlds and states of consciousness. It felt deeply aligned. Because something is ending here; a way of reacting... a version of you rooted in survival. A pattern that once protected you, but no longer serves your growth. In its place, a more conscious relationship to fire is emerging.

Mars Between Saturn & Neptune; Refining the Flame

Mars, the ruler of this lunation, sits between Saturn and Neptune with Mercury... shaping how this fire moves. Saturn asks for responsibility. Neptune blurs the edges of truth. Mercury tries to make sense of it all. This is a time to pause just long enough to feel where your movement is coming from. Is it urgency rooted in fear? Or is it clarity rooted in truth?

Because Aries energy is powerful... but without awareness, it can misdirect itself. With awareness, it becomes courage guided by wisdom.

Uranus Enters Gemini; The Beginning of a New Era

As this New Moon unfolds, Uranus makes its final pass through the last degrees of Taurus, where it's been since 2018, moving into Gemini on April 26.

Over the past years, we have been asked to redefine stability; to question what we rely on, to reconnect with the body and the Earth in new ways. Many structures in our lives and the collective have shifted. As Uranus shifts into Gemini, the energy moves into the mind. Into perception, communication, and the way we process reality. This is a shift toward adaptability, openess, the ability to change our perspective in real time. This Aries New Moon is the spark that lights that transition... a moment of ignition that will ripple forward into this new era.

This New Moon is asking you to become more conscious of the fire that already lives within you. To recognize where you are reacting from old survival patterns and where you are ready to move with clarity, courage and intention. There is something ending here... a way of being, a way of protecting yourself, a version of you that got you this far. At the same time, something new is trying to emerge from truth - from fire directed with awareness.

Where is 27 degrees of Aries in my chart? How does that relate to the themes described above?

Where am I reacting from instinct rather than responding from truth?

What am I being asked to fight for and is it aligned with who I am becoming?

What would it look like to channel my fire with intention, rather than urgency?

Embodiment Practice

This is not an energy to think your way through. Aries lives in the body... in the adrenals, in the instinct, in the part of you that moves before you fully understand why. And with so much activation here, this isn’t something that will resolve through reflection alone.

It needs to be felt, moved, expressed. Rather than offering a self-guided practice here, I’ve created a free Spring Embodiment Journey to work with this energy... a guided experience to help you move this energy through your body and consciously step into this new astrological cycle.

This is a space to work with your fire in real time; to notice where you want to push, where you want to hold back, and how to move from a place of awareness rather than reaction.
